10 of the Most Common Acne Myths

What we think we know about acne is steadily being replaced by what scientists are learning. Meanwhile, many myths continue to circulate and endure. Clearing up some of the misunderstandings about acne is what this article is about.

Myth #1: Acne only affects appearance

Acne can also cause deep psychological distress. Severe acne can lead to low self-image and feeling depressed. There is a strong link between severe acne and social withdrawal.

Myth #2: Acne is caused by poor hygiene

While skin infections are associated with acne, lack of cleanliness is not the reason for acne outbreaks. The combination of oil and dead cells which produce acne is located beneath the skin's surface where it is impossible to clean it away. Gentle cleansing with soap and water once or twice daily will keep your skin as healthy as possible. Scrubbing too hard may worsen acne.

Myth #3: Acne is caused by specific foods

Chocolate has long had a reputation as a pimple producer. Studies have shown no scientific evidence that this is true. The same holds true for potato chips and sugar. There are some foods that do seem to aggravate (not cause) the condition: milk and foods high in iodine, such as seafood.

Myth #4: Acne has to run its course

There are many acne treatments available both over-the-counter and stronger medicines from a dermatologist.

Myth #5: The more acne medicine the better

Some people believe that if their acne gets worse they should just use more medicine. That's a bad idea because medicines can be dangerous when taken in large quantities. Excess use of acne ointments may just irritate the skin further.

Myth #6: Sunbathing is good for acne

Exposure to the sun dries out excess oils, so it does improve acne short-term. However, long-term the skin adapts and the acne is unfazed. Worse, there is scientific evidence that sun exposure damages the skin and increases the chance of skin cancer.

Myth #7: Makeup causes acne

Some makeup products can clog the pores, which is bad for the health of your skin. Cosmetics that are labeled "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic" are safe to use. Some brands are made with ingredients that actually treat acne.

Myth #8: Acne is only a teenage condition

While most teens have acne, so do many adults. Acne generally clears up by the early 20s. But some people experience acne for the first time as late as their 40s. And for the most unfortunate of all, some people endure acne flare-ups their entire lives.

We've probably all heard that either celibacy or too much sex causes pimples. There is no evidence for this. There is a link between sexual activity and hormone production, but the relationship between sex and the production of sebum (the oily substance which combines with dead skin cells to cause acne) is not known. Stress and anger also affect hormone levels.

Myth #10: Popping pimples is the best way to get rid of them

The fact is popping pimples may worsen acne by spreading the bacteria that is causing it. Popping can also lead to eventual scarring, which in severe cases, can be permanent.

New FDA-approved Acne Treatment - Hope for Acne Sufferers

According to the Dermatology Times, 1 October 2023, the FDA recently approved a new gel called IDP-126 for treating acne. It's the first gel to combine clindamycin, adapalene, and benzoyl peroxide for acne. Studies showed that more than half of the people who used IDP-126 gel saw their acne get better, and their skin became clearer.

In one study, almost half of the people using IDP-126 had clearer skin compared to those using a regular gel. Another study showed similar results, with more IDP-126 users having clearer skin than those using the regular gel.

Patients using IDP-126 gel noticed fewer noninflammatory lesions. By week twelve of using the product, a large majority of patients using IDP-126 gel had fewer non inflammatory lesions compared to before starting the treatment.

Shanna Miranti, a founding member and board-certified physician assistant at Riverchase Dermatology in Naples, Florida, explained in an interview with Dermatology Times, "that when patients notice initial improvements, they're more likely to stick with a product."

FAQs

We answer all your questions

1. Are all oily skin types prone to acne?

Acne-prone skin is often associated with excess oil production, but not all oily skin types necessarily develop acne. Acne is influenced by various factors, including genetics, hormones, and skincare routines, rather than just skin type. It's essential to address the root causes of acne, such as clogged pores and bacteria, regardless of skin type.

2. Do all skincare products claiming to treat acne effectively work?

Many skincare products marketed for acne may not always deliver the promised results. It's crucial to look for ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, known for their effectiveness in combating acne. Consulting a dermatologist can help you determine the right products and treatments for your specific skin condition.

3. Can acne scars be completely removed?

While some treatments can help improve the appearance of acne scars, it's challenging to completely erase them. Procedures like laser therapy or chemical peels may reduce the visibility of scars, but individual results may vary. It's essential to focus on preventing skin damage and promoting skin health to minimize the risk of scarring.

4. Is it true that certain foods cause acne breakouts?

The link between diet and acne breakouts is a topic of debate. While some individuals may notice that certain foods like sugary or dairy products exacerbate acne, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. It's essential to separate fact from fiction by monitoring your diet and observing how it affects your skin to determine any correlations.

5. Does removing dead skin cells help prevent acne?

Exfoliating to remove dead skin cells can improve overall skin texture and appearance, but it may not directly prevent acne. However, excessive exfoliation can irritate the skin and disrupt its protective barrier, potentially leading to more skin problems. Finding the right balance in exfoliation is key for managing acne without causing further irritation.
