Beauty and the Beast Within - Could Adult Acne Treatment Be Romantic?

No really, could adult acne treatment be romantic? Well, if you use the work "treatment" in a romantic way? Strong's dictionary defines "treatment" as, "to act or speak towards (someone) with respect, tenderness, or kindness." So I guess you could say that giving someone adult acne treatment could be considered romantic, if you look at it the right way.

And anyway, what is romance? For me its something that’s not so hard to define, and boy, I know it when I see it! Its the candlelight dinner (great, by-the-way, to hide zits!), the bouquet of flowers (again, great by-the-way, to hide zits!)

You can stick your nose deeply into its fragrant glory while looking wistfully at yourself in the wineglass reflection!), and what about the sweet serenade of love songs? Or is it the moment when your partner finally agrees to take out the trash?

Some might say that romance is in the eye of the beholder, but no matter how you define it, romance is an essential part of any relationship. I prefer to keep my rose-tinted glasses firmly in place and bask in the romance of a life well lived, complete with regular visits to my dermatologist.

It's my little secret to getting the best arsenal of prescription and OTC goodies to combat those nasty breakouts. After all, a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do to maintain her clear and beautiful complexion - so why not make sure it's done with a smile and a sense of adventure?

Think of it this way: your dermo is showing you s/he cares enough to invest in your well-being, acting with tenderness and kindness, and respecting your need to get your skin looking its best. Bring on the moisturizers, retinol topical treatments and masks! We are treating acne!

Plus, if it works, you'll have a happy and confident dermo who supports your post-baby efforts to look "great"! Why, because s/he has the "romantic" treatment down pat! Now that's romance!

My Journey with Acne

Throughout my teenage years, I had heard my mom say time and time again that people's inner worth was a million times more valuable than their outward appearance, and the truth of her words were especially noticeable when I compared my own life to that of my peers.

Theirs was the dewy, luminous, porcelain-like skin that was so smooth you could practically see your reflection in it. But me? Well, I had the 'strong' inner journey of trying to build my virtue and character - you know, all the good stuff inside - but it was a long and arduous task.

My skin was certainly not flawless, and a lot of times I felt like throwing in the towel when it comes to the schlepp to treat acne. But then I'd remember that inner strength was much more important than a perfect complexion, and I'd start all over again with my journey to build character and virtue. So while their skin glowed, mine glowed with a resilience that can only come from within.

As a self-conscious teen, I was constantly aware of my clothing choices, hair styles, and other features that I thought defined my exterior, but I never seemed to realize how much my personality and personal values were worth to others.

My mom's words of wisdom always stayed with me, and it gradually became apparent to me how much a person's inner worth was worth compared to their external features. I started to realize that people judged me for more than my appearance.

At a age 14, I was painfully aware of a big, nasty zit on my forehead when I went to the movies on my first date. I had tried everything to get rid of it, from popping it to applying special creams and face masks, but to no avail.

I was so embarrassed by it that I was convinced that everyone in the theater was staring at it, and that my date would be completely disgusted by its presence.

Little did I know, he hardly noticed it at all and, thankfully, our date went on without any issues. It's this little thing of his "zit oblivion" that endeared him to me even more. Though I’ll never forget the worry I felt that night, it’s a reminder that no matter what, inner worth triumphs over external looks. Thankfully, that chapter closed and the zits became few and far between as I journeyed into adulthood.

Adult acne hit me squarely in the middle of my face after my first baby - like a sucker punch in the jaw! I was convinced that I had finally escaped the teenage years of acne woes, only to realize that my skin was now a battleground for hormones once again. It was a rude awakening to suddenly find myself dealing with adult acne.

At the start of my adult acne journey, I had to go back to my dermatologist, make some changes to my skin care routine, and arm myself with prescriptions and over-the-counter treatments at the start of my new romance with acne. It's been a long journey, but I've finally made peace with my skin, and it's all thanks to my baby (and me dermo of course)!

From Pimples to Perfection: Breaking Free from Adult Acne

Adult acne is a common condition that affects many people and can cause them to feel embarrassed or ashamed of their appearance. However, while it can be a source of insecurity, there is a silver lining to it in the form of romantic treatments.

"Beauty and the Beast Within" is my own concept that posits that we all have an internal beauty and a beast within us. Treatments like facials and other skincare treatments like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic and a host of naturals like tea tea oil, aloe vera and the like, can help to reveal the natural beauty we have while also having a therapeutic and "romantic" effect (remember "romance" means: well-being, acting with tenderness and kindness toward another, but in this case, to yourself).

These treatments can help to clear up skin issues in a gentle and nurturing way, which can be a great way to show affection and kindness to yourself. Ultimately, acne does not have to be a burden, and it can actually be an opportunity for romantic bonding with your inner self!

What in the world does my hair follicles have to do with acne?

It's tempting to think that once you reach a certain age, you'll be free from the troubles of teenage years like acne. But according to a survey published in 2008 involving 1,013 adults aged 20 and older, many people are still struggling with this issue.

animated girl with acne

35 percent of women and 20 percent of men said they were still troubled by facial acne in their 30s - and those numbers were even higher for those 50 and older, with 15 percent of women and 7 percent of men still battling breakouts.

Clearly, acne doesn't always just vanish as you get older for many of us. In fact, it seems like some people just can't catch a break - no matter how hard they scrub!

Hair follicles are an important part of the skin's anatomy, as they are responsible for the production of hair. Additionally, the follicle can play an important role in the development of acne. When the follicle is clogged with dirt and oil, it can lead to inflammation, which can then cause breakouts.

The follicle can also be affected by hormones, which can lead to an increase in sebum production, which can also contribute to the development of acne. Follicles can be affected by bacteria, which can lead to an increase in inflammation and acne. While hair follicles may not directly cause acne, they can certainly play an important role in the development of clogged pores and "the acne condition.

Adult acne is an incredibly common and difficult problem to tackle, and the frustration and embarrassment it can cause can be challenging. It can be especially hard for adults to try to control their acne, as the skin changes so much from when we are young. But, it is possible to break free from this struggle and embark on a journey of self-improvement.

Whether it’s through diet and lifestyle changes, medication, or other treatments, there are a range of options that can help reduce the severity of adult acne. This blog will explore these options and provide advice for those who want to take control of their acne and start the journey of self-improvement.

We hope that this blog post can provide people with the guidance they need to break free from adult acne and take the first step on their journey of self-improvement.

Here's my 5-step journey to break free!

My strategies to combat Severe Acne

I have found that there are several strategies that can be employed to combat severe acne.

animated image of a young lady

Consistent skin care routine

First and foremost, it is essential to follow a consistent skin care routine. In my facial regimen, I include cleansing my skin with a gentle cleanser twice a day and exfoliating at least once a week.

Moisturize properly

Many people prone to acne have been conditioned to believe that the only way to treat breakouts is to dry them out. As a result, they often skip the moisturizing step, which is probably the worst thing they can do! That's a "no-no"! Not only does moisturizing keep the skin hydrated, it also helps to keep breakouts in check by keeping the skin balanced.

Use topical medications

Additionally, I use my dermo's advice to use topical medications, such as retinoids or antibiotics, when necessary. And I treated my acne with both topical treatments such as Azelaic acid, medications and oral prescribed medication to keep my acne under control.

Make lifestyle changes!

Furthermore, I have an ongoing mountain to climb to make lifestyle changes, such as avoiding foods that are high in sugar and dairy, as these can be triggers for breakouts.

SPF 30 or higher!

Finally, I never forget the importance to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect my skin from further damage. By utilizing these strategies, I have seen a reduction in the severity of my inflammatory acne.

Romance and Make-Up

- will it conceal my deepest secret desires?

Romance and make-up can enhance our physical appearance, but they cannot conceal our deepest desires.

Our desire for love, acceptance, and security are often hidden deep within our hearts and cannot be disguised by an outward show of attractiveness.

To truly connect with another on an emotional level, we must be honest with ourselves and willing to share our most intimate feelings.

Make-up can be a powerful tool to help us express our inner beauty, but it cannot take away the fear of being vulnerable and open to another.

To form meaningful relationships and create a deeper connection, we must be willing to take the risk and let our true selves be seen.

Don't let acne define you. Acne is really common, normal, and mostly out of our control, so deal!

AI generated image - girl portrait with thick eyebrow 'Escaping the Adult Acne Struggle'

If you've tried just about every topical therapy out there, and still haven't seen the results you were hoping for, it might be time to venture off into the deep, dark abyss that is systemic treatment options prescribed by your dermatologist.

Acne is a common, normal, and often uncontrollable skin condition that affects many people. Despite its prevalence, it is important to remember that it does not define who you are as an individual. After all, we all have different skin and different problems, so why should one issue stand out?

Acne can be a tough monster to manage, but with the right treatments and medications, you can keep it in check! It's important to consult with a dermatologist to determine the best course of action for your skin.

There's no one size fits all when it comes to skin care - you may need to try a few different options before you find the right one for you. Don't be afraid to ask your dermatologist for advice - after all, they know best!

Here's the prescription for happiness: take two doses of laughter, three spoonful's of optimism, a pinch of creativity, and a whole lot of positivity! And if that doesn't work, don't worry - there are plenty of other remedies that your dermo can prescribe!

More severe cases of acne may require a combination of over-the-counter products and a prescription oral treatment, like Accutane (isotretinoin), a derivative of Vitamin A that reduces the amount of oils released by glands in the skin. Because retinoids can cause severe birth defects, women who use Accutane should be extra cautious if they plan on having children.

Oral antibiotics

Oral antibiotics may be prescribed to keep acne under control, but that regimen could lead to some unintended consequences. Topical antibiotics alone aren't recommended. Those pesky drug-resistant bacteria! And if you think that's bad, just wait until you have to deal with the drug-resistant super-bugs that our overuse of antibiotics is creating.

Yikes! Just follow your doctor's instructions closely and take the medication for the shortest amount of time possible.

Oral birth control

Oral birth control pills can also help regulate hormones that contribute to acne. You may have heard of taking a pill once a day to keep the doctor away, but have you heard of taking a pill once a day to keep your acne away?

It's true, taking oral birth control pills can help regulate the hormones that contribute to acne and give you more clear, glowing skin.

Antibiotics

Erythromycin and Lymecycline were like the dynamic duo of superhero antibiotics, ready to save the world from the dastardly germs and bacteria that try to wreak havoc!

Due to the alarming and ever-growing number of P. acnes strains resistant to clindamycin and erythromycin, it is now widely accepted that the use of either of these substances alone is contra-indicated for acne prone skin.

This could make your acne worse and cause additional infections. Best to consult your dermo! Side effects are uncommon, but can include: minor irritation of the skin, making your face feel like it's on fire; redness and burning of the skin, making you look like you've spent the day in a sauna.

If you are peeling off the skin, making your face look like a molting lizard, be aware that in rare cases, this treatment have been anecdotally said to worsen acne.

Prescription Acids

Prescription alpha hydroxy acid, or other helpful acids (like glycolic acid and lactic acid), for a guaranteed clear complexion! Hydroxy acids, also known as 'the Fountain of Youth', are the best topical treatments to get a guaranteed clear complexion by removing dead skin cells!

Glycolic acid is like the fairy godmother of skincare - it helps prevent breakouts by keeping your pores clear and helping to remove any clogged pores you have.

If you want to get rid of acne fast, chemical peels and blue light therapies are the way to go! You'll go in, get your face all scrubbed down, and get out looking like a brand new person.

It's kind of like going to the spa, except you won't be as relaxed because you'll be worried about the potentially painful process of getting rid of your acne or heal acne scars, irritation and skin redness and potential inflammation if your skin is of the sensitive kind.

So, if you're scared of the light because you do have sensitive skin, don't be! It won't hurt you, it just might make you a bit uncomfortable for a few minutes. But it's worth it in the end, because you'll get to show off your new clear skin that you can be proud of.

Other ingredients that dermo's recommend seeking out are azelaic acid (to clear acne-causing bacteria from the pores. So you can have the best skin possible for your next Zoom call).

Niacinamide (to regulate oil and reduce inflammation associated with persistent acne, so you can show off your best self)

Hyaluronic acid (to soothe redness and hydrate the skin, so your skin will look dewy and fresh).

If you're like most of us and don't have a lot of fancy skincare items in your arsenal, remember, don't worry, this doesn't mean you have to swear off all skincare - it just means you are selective.

Side-effects Checklist

Whatever medication (drugs) you start to eradicate the problem from within, reduce sebum production or acne scars, make sure you don't just take them at face value - ask about their side-effects!

This will help you to make an informed decision, and while it shouldn't be your only consideration, it's certainly a good idea to think twice before taking any remedies for your oil glands, their anti-inflammatory effects and your hormonal fluctuations!

For example, have you ever heard of the 'miracle cure' that made people suddenly sprout wings? Probably not, but it's worth asking about all the same to prevent more severe acne.

Or maybe there's some sort of 'magical elixir' that promises to make you grow taller, but could in fact just turn you green instead! The possibilities are endless...

Self-care and healthy habits can play a significant role in managing acne

Photo by Tim Goedhart / Unsplash

Studies have shown that eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and reducing stress can all help to keep acne under control.

Ultimately, it is important to remember that acne does not define you and should be managed through a combination of professional treatments and self-care.

Be diligent about your skin care routine, like it's your job or something. It's not, but hey, at least if you make taking care of your skin a priority, you'll look better than if you didn't.

"The best tip for treating current breakouts and preventing future ones is to get yourself into a regular skin care routine using topical ingredients appropriate for your skin type," says skin care expert, Dr. Miles Lopez.

Sure, it might seem like a lot of work, but isn't looking your best worth it? Plus, it's not like you have to do it daily and if your sebaceous glands work nicely you will have no excess sebum. You can start slowly and just commit to a routine twice a week and then you can increase it as needed.

Be patient and don't expect a miracle overnight! Change takes time, and it definitely won’t happen with one night of skincare topical retinoids!

According to renowned skin care expert, Dr. Susan Smith, it’s like a workout for your skin - you need consistency and dedication to really get the most out of it.

That means you’ll need to stick to the same skincare routine every day and be sure to use the right topical ingredients for your skin type if you want to see any real improvements and not make matters of acne worse.

It’ll feel like a never ending cycle of application and removal, but trust us, the results will be worth it! So don't give up - your skin will thank you later!

Highs, lows & new-found self-love

My acne story is one of highs and lows, but ultimately a journey to self-acceptance. During my teenage years, my acne was a source of insecurity and distress, affecting my confidence and self-esteem.

Photo by Mathieu Stern / Unsplash

As I reached adulthood, I decided to take proactive steps to treat my acne. I developed a skincare routine, focusing on hydration and gentle exfoliation, and experimented with products and treatments.

While the process was not always easy, I eventually found success in clearing my skin.

Along the way, I learned to accept my body and accept myself, ultimately cultivating a new-found sense of self-love and appreciation for my skin.

And not forgetting: I thank my dermatologist from the bottom of my heart for offering me more advanced treatment in order to control acne.

The Takeaways
